Delmont church looking to the future

DELMONT, S.D. (AP) — Members of Zion Lutheran Church in Delmont celebrated Easter in the town’s community center, but they hope to be worshipping in a new church come Christmas.

The congregation’s century-old church was destroyed by a May 2015 tornado that damaged or destroyed dozens of structures and injured nine people.

Head Trustee Jim Kaufman says the final blueprint for a new church is being sent to five contractors for bids. The goal is to start construction sometime next month.

Kaufman says parishioners never considered not rebuilding. He says six generations of his family have attended Zion Lutheran.

Kaufman also says that with insurance money and donations providing the necessary resources, it’s a “no-brainer” to rebuild.

Museum re-modeling complete

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — The Prehistoric Indian Village in Mitchell is opening its remodeled Boehnen Memorial Museum on Friday.

The renovation began in the fall of 2014. It includes a new audio-visual technology wing, exhibits, gift shop, lighting and a newly configured entrance. A large teaching garden also has been added to the museum’s grounds.

Village Executive Director Cindy Gregg says the project will give visitors an expanded educational experience.

The site is a 1,000 year-old Native American village being excavated each summer by students from the University of Exeter in England and Augustana University in Sioux Falls. It’s the only active archaeological site open to the public in South Dakota.

"Little Bit of You" Started as a String of Texts with Chase Bryant's Ex-Girlfriend

BBR Music GroupChase Bryant’s second single, “Little Bit of You,” is not only the biggest hit of his career so far, it also has a serious shot at going number one — not too bad for a song that was a bit of an accident.

“Man, it was kinda one of those songs that just happened spontaneously. We weren’t really meaning to write that one, it kinda just happened,” he recalls. “It was a text message back and forth between me and my ex-girlfriend that I was with at the time, and that’s really kinda how it started. It was just kind of a log of text chains that had kinda come back and forth and back and forth.”

From there, Chase says he ended up writing a straightforward song about what it’s like to be away from the one you love.

“I felt like I just was like ready to write a song that wasn’t trying to be clever and wasn’t trying to be anything contrived. It was just one of those songs that just said, ‘I need you here, that’s what it is, and I need you here now.’ And that’s really how it got written, too. You know what I mean? I think it’s just a real sum-up of what the sky looks like at midnight and what you need there beside you.”

The Texas native also managed to craft a song that has some longevity. “Little Bit of You” has been on the charts for almost a year.

Clare Bowen & Chris Carmack from ABC's "Nashville" Play Benefit for Emmylou Harris's Bonaparte's Retreat This Weekend

ABCCountry Music Hall of Famer Emmylou Harris hits the stage with the stars of ABC’s Nashville this weekend in Music City. Clare BowenChris Carmack and more will play a benefit Saturday night at Nashville’s 3rd & Lindsley, as part of the annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival.

Money raised goes to Bonaparte’s Retreat, a nonprofit Emmylou founded in 2004 after the death of her beloved pup Bonaparte. Its mission is to rescue shelter dogs and adopt them into forever homes.

“Bonaparte had this really friendly demeanor, loved people, [was] very sociable, loved other animals. Once you have the experience of having a dog on the road with you, you don’t realize how lonely you’ve been without one. So he went everywhere with me. He was my constant companion for 10 years,” she reminisces.

The name “Bonaparte’s Retreat” is also a tip of the hat to the song that was a huge hit for Pee Wee KingKay Starr and Glen Campbell. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. You can find out more about Emmylou’s cause online at BonapartesRetreat.org.
