Warner Music NashvilleIf you caught Blake Shelton performing “Doing It to Country Songs” with his heroes The Oak Ridge Boys on Wednesday’s CMT Music Awards, you have some idea how much fun the two must’ve had together in the studio. The star of The Voice has accused the Country Music Hall of Famers of being unnecessarily perfectionistic — all in fun, of course.
“He’s been ragging on us!” Joe Bonsall says. “He was talking about how we kept wanting to get it better or do it better and then we wanted to try to punch it in better… he said, ‘Man those guys got it on the second take. They were driving me crazy.’ So we drove him a little crazy, but that’s not a far drive!”
The “Elvira” icons have their own stories about Blake’s studio antics, too.
“After we got everybody in the studio that came with us out there to sing it, and create kind of a party atmosphere, we heard part of the crowd laughing,” Duane Allen recalls. “And we looked around and Blake was over against the wall singing in falsetto like an old woman!… If you listen real closely on the record, you can probably hear him.”
“Right at the end fade out, it’s really funny, man,” Joe chimes in. “He’s a funny character. He’s funny all day, all night — he’s just funny.”
