Mercury NashvilleEarlier this year, Canaan Smith got caught up in the energy of his concert and demolished a drum during his show. That flash of adrenaline ended up being the spark to start his new Smash Cancer initiative.
“While it was fun destroying the drum at the end of our set, we didn’t know what to do with it,” Canaan recalls. “So we thought, ‘Let’s get it to the people would would appreciate it the most.’ Fans totally latched on, which made me realize we could turn this into something positive and benefit a charity I’ve been passionate about for a while.”
So far, Canaan’s raised close to $20,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, autographing the wreckage and then auctioning it off to the crowd. Music retailer Guitar Center even caught on to what he’s doing and started giving him drum kits.
The Virginia native’s huge hit, “Love You Like That,” was recently certified platinum. You can see Canaan next Sunday on a special edition of Spike TV’s show Bar Rescue.
