Dolly Parton Visits "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" for the First Time

RB/Bauer-Griffin/GC ImagesCountry superstar and national treasure Dolly Parton mare her first-ever appearance Monday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Kimmel was genuinely excited to welcome Dolly, who for her part seemed tickled to be there. She wrote a skin-tight white top and sparkling sequined black pants and looked remarkably young for someone who will turn 71 in January.

Noting that Dolly’s new album, Pure & Simple, is her first number-one country album in 25 years, Kimmel asked if the resurgence of interest surprised her.  “I never let up,” Dolly replied.  “I’m always behind the scenes workin’ and any time someone says ‘Dolly makes a comeback’ I say, ‘Where did I go?’”

Dolly also shared a funny story about Willie Nelson, whom she’s known her entire professional life.  She revealed it’s hard to sing with Nelson because of his signature phrasing.  She said once, when they were working on a duet, she became so frustrated that she called him and said, “Willie, send me a sack of that grass you’re smoking, because I can’t follow you!”

Parton later appeared on the Samsung Stage to perform “Outside Your Door” from Pure & Simple, then treated the crowd to a lively version of “9 to 5” as the show closed.

Parton will do a short run of tour dates beginning in November and wrapping the second week of December. Visit DollyParton.com for details.
