Monty Brinton/CBSHe didn’t capture the Album of the Year category — that went to Adele — but Sturgill Stimpson’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth won the Best Country Album trophy last night at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.
Sturgill also performed on the show, singing “All Around You” backed by the Dap-Kings, the band of the late Sharon Jones.
Maren Morris, the most-nominated country artist of the year, took home one trophy: Best Country Solo Performance for “My Church.” At the podium, Maren recalled how, 11 years ago, she attended the first-ever Grammy camp, and now she’s got an actual Grammy. During the telecast, Maren also duetted with Alicia Keys on her song “Once,” wearing a sequined bodysuit with an extremely plunging neckline.
Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban also duetted during the telecast, on their song “The Fighter.” Little Big Town participated in a Bee Gees tribute, singing “How Deep Is Your Love,” and introduced Katy Perry’s performance with a great rendition of Katy’s hit “Teenage Dream.”
In the category of Best Country Duo or Group Performance, Dolly Parton won her 8th Grammy for her duet with a cappella group Pentatonix on a remake of her song “Jolene.” Best Country Song went to Lori McKenna for writing Tim McGraw‘s hit “Humble and Kind.” Speaking of Tim, he and wife Faith Hill got to announce the two biggest awards of the night: Record of the Year and Album of the Year.
Speaking of those awards, Sunday night’s big winner was pop superstar Adele, whose monster-selling album 25 won five trophies, including Album of the Year, and Record and Song of the Year for the single “Hello.” Although she went into the ceremony with a leading nine nominations, all of them for her critically-acclaimed Lemonade album, Beyonce had to content herself with just two wins.
