Back to Us: Rascal Flatts remembers their roots, as they celebrate their 17th #1

ABC RadioRascal Flatts celebrated their seventeenth #1 Thursday with a party at BMI, on Nashville’s Music Row.

“Yours If You Want It” was the perfect song to introduce their latest album, Back to Us, according to Joe Don Rooney.

“I think everything Rascal Flatts is about is inside that song,” Joe Don says. “It’s an uptempo song, it’s a lot of fun, but when you really dissect the lyrics… it’s a really great, lot of meat-on-the-bone lyric…”

Gary LeVox revealed one of the ways “Yours If You Want It” hearkens back to their roots. The song’s video was shot at the same location as their very first photo shoot, Music City’s Hermitage Café.

“That’s where we started…,” Gary recalls. “Our album cover for [our first hit] ‘Prayin’ for Daylight’ is right there in the parking lot…”

Jay DeMarcus remembered the very first time he and his bandmates ever heard one of their songs on the radio, during a late night call-in segment.

“The first caller was like, ‘I love it. It’s different. I say shine the light on it!’” Jay explains, imitating the voices of the listeners. “The second caller was a dude, and we were all huddled around the radio, up in the front of the bus. He said, ‘I tell you what. I don’t like that at all! You need to turns the lights out on that! It’s awful!’ And the next two calls were bad calls. And then after that, there were about ten in a row that were good calls.”

“But I tell you what,” Jay continues, “for the first four calls, we were like going, ‘Oh no! Oh no! Take the bus back, and let’s get our jobs back at Piggly Wiggly, cause this is awful.’”
