Scott Legato/Getty ImagesAs the country community continues to reel from the mass shooting in Vegas this weekend, the news came that legendary rocker Tom Petty had passed away.
The 66-year-old died Monday night after going into cardiac arrest at his Malibu home the previous evening. He was rushed to UCLA Medical Center but couldn’t be revived.
Though Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, their music still resonated with country audiences and many of today’s biggest stars. Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley covered Tom’s “Southern Accents” on his solo album, The Driver, duetting with Tom’s friend Stevie Nicks on the track.
“Between the Vegas shooting and now @TomPetty sad news I’m in a state of shock,” Charles tweeted. “What a sad day.”
Randy Houser covered Petty’s classic “I Won’t Back Down” at his concert Monday night in London.
