BBR Music Group In a year that’s seen him opening for the likes of Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan and Garth Brooks, Granger Smith says there’s no denying that the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year stands head and shoulders above the rest.
“It seems like you continue to find out there’s always another level,” Granger tells ABC Radio. “There was something different about Garth. The entire organization, it was like they were operating on their own plan…They did everything a little bit differently, in a good way. They kinda flipped the script.”
Granger admits it didn’t hurt that the night he was opening for Garth and Trisha Yearwood, they’d planned a celebration for the six millionth ticket buyer on their World Tour.
“They brought [him] down from the upper balcony,” the “Backroad Song” hitmaker recalls. “[He] didn’t know that [he was] about to meet Garth and Trisha. They…gave him a wheelbarrow, and they pushed the wheelbarrow down the middle of Garth’s band and crew, and everyone threw a different gift into the wheelbarrow, whether it was merch or an iTunes gift card.”
It only got better from there.
“By the time he got to Garth and Trisha…they opened a garage door and there was two cars: a truck and an SUV,” recalls Granger. “And there was tears and crying and hugging. And I’m just thinking ‘What is this? The Wizard of Oz?’ It’s just like Oprah meets country music!”
Granger’s sophomore album, When the Good Guys Win, is new in stores and online. It features his latest top 25 hit, “Happens Like That.”
