ABC/Image Group LA For the second year in a row, Keith Urban ushered in the New Year by playing Nashville’s free Music City Midnight celebration on December 31. He also continued a tradition he started in 2016, closing out the year by playing a medley dedicated to the musicians we’ve lost in the past twelve months.
The Aussie superstar started with “Black Hole Sun,” a tribute to Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, before seguing into Gregg Allman’s “Midnight Rider” and Chuck Berry’s ““Johnny B. Goode.”
The mash-up continued with Don Williams’ “Tulsa Time,” Glen Campbell’s “Wichita Lineman,” and Montgomery Gentry’s “My Town,” an ode to Troy Gentry, who was killed in a helicopter crash in September.
Keith concluded with AC/DC’s “Back in Black,” a nod to the band’s late guitarist Malcolm Young, before singing a full-length version of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’.”
