ABC/Randy HolmesLuke Combs celebrated his second #1, “When It Rains It Pours,” with a party Wednesday at BMI’s Nashville headquarters.
The “Hurricane” hitmaker wrote the funny song about the upside of love gone wrong, with Jordan Walker of new duo Walker Hayes and singer/songwriter Ray Fulcher.
Luke freely admits the tune was inspired by the ghosts of girlfriends past.
“We kinda all talked about how we’d been in that situation where it was like, you’re kinda waiting to get out, or maybe you didn’t realize that you wanted to get out,” he explains. “And then you did, and you’re like, ‘Man, what a relief,’ you know? ‘What a great thing.’ So I think we played on that well and turned it into a fun thing.”
And Luke’s romantic status at the time?
“I was actually dating someone…” he confesses, “so there may have been some subconscious thoughts going on there when we wrote that song,” he quips, without clarifying the status of his relationship now.
The North Carolina native has already started working on the follow-up to his breakthrough album, This One’s for You. He’s just released “One Number Away” as his debut’s third single.
