RCA RecordsOn Friday, Justin Timberlake released “Say Something,” a duet with his pal, country star Chris Stapleton, from his upcoming album Man of the Woods. But it turns out that Chris, who won three Grammy Awards on Sunday night, did a lot more on the album than just co-write and sing on that one song.
“I was around for a lot of ’em,” Stapleton told reporters backstage. “I wrote the one that Alicia Keys is singing on, I wrote another one on the record.” Chris apologized for forgetting the song titles — they’re “Morning Light” and “The Hard Stuff,” respectively.
In addition, Chris revealed, “The very first sound you hear on ‘Filthy,’ that’s me playing with the delay pedal on the Jazzmaster [guitar]. So we were around making music, and it was a big time, it was fun.”
But strangely, Chris’ vocal part on “Say Something” came about by accident.
“I really just went out to Los Angeles to write songs with him,” Chris told reporters. “And it’s a very fluid process with him, there’s a lot goin’ on and it wasn’t necessarily a plan. And he was like, ‘All right, you hop in there and take a verse.’ I’m like ‘You want me to do what?'”
“I thought it was great,” he added, “I have a blast with him, he’s a great creative force and one of those guys, if you get a chance to work with him, you should.”
