ABC/Image Group LA For his latest smash, Thomas Rhett took a “what if” moment and turned it into “Marry Me,” imagining what could’ve happened if he’d never pursued the woman who eventually became his wife.
“Everybody has those turning points in their life,” he explains, “where you have these moments where you can either go left or go right. And if you go left, then you never know what would’ve been in that right direction.”
“So this song was written out of a space of like, if I had never told Lauren how I’d felt about her, then more than likely I would’ve been invited to that wedding of her marrying somebody else.”
The “Marry Me” video plays out like a mini-movie, with the main character regretting he never made a romantic move toward the woman he loves.
“I probably wouldn’t have been as sad as the guy in the video,” Thomas admits, “but it probably would’ve still wrecked me. I think when you fall in love with somebody at a young age, that kind of thing still sort of lingers with you for a long time.”
The video ends with a cliffhanger, as the potential bride goes to the lovesick protagonist, but it’s unclear whether she’s gone through with her wedding or not. So how does Thomas Rhett believe things turned out?
“At the end, I wanted to really just rein in that Nicholas Sparks moment…” he says, “and really give the viewers a positive ending. So I think she left the wedding and came, and now they’re together, wherever they are — living in the Virgin Islands somewhere.”
