ABC/Image Group LA Rolling Stone nicknames Maren Morris “The Boundary Pusher” in the article titled “The New Classics” in the latest issue of the magazine — and the Texas native is inclined to agree.
Now that she’s had a huge pop hit with “The Middle,” the “My Church” hitmaker expects to spread her wings a bit on her sophomore record, which she’s working on now.
“I want to strike a balance of continuing the story but also being a little edgy,” she tells Rolling Stone.
Maren also recounts the first time she heard “The Middle,” her smash with DJ/producer Zedd and electronic duo Grey. At the time, she was on vacation in Tulum, Mexico, shortly before November’s CMA Awards.
“Oh my God, this is a jam,” Maren says, recalling her initial reaction. “I had never felt that kind of energy for a song I didn’t write.”
Maren’s set to perform “The Middle” on Sunday’s Billboard Music Awards, along with Zedd and Grey. The show airs live from Las Vegas starting at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
