ABC/Image Group LA Chris Lane strips it down and gets emotional on “Hero,” the latest preview track from his new album Laps Around the Sun, which comes out next Friday.
The first two verses of the song are about, respectively, a woman who needs a “hero” to save her from being lonely, and a boy who needs a “hero” to make up for his absent father. But by the time the North Carolina gets to to the track’s third verse, he’s singing about his faith.
“If you wanna feel something real/That this mean old world can’t kill/Not even Satan/There’s a savior, he’ll wash away your sins,” sings Chris. “Open up your heart, accept him and/he’ll save your soul/Jesus is a hero /And everybody needs a hero.”
“‘Hero’ is a very special song to me,” Chris reflects. “I’ve never had a song quite like this one. It’s one of those story songs you always look for, and the third verse really hits home for me. It’s who I am, it’s how I grew up.”
“Hero” is available to stream or download now, or you can check out an audio-only version on YouTube.
Laps Around the Sun arrives July 13, and just a few days later, on Tuesday, July 17, Chris will sing the project’s top ten lead single, “Take Back Home Girl,” on NBC’s Today show with pop star Tori Kelly.
