The Judds‘ complicated relationship was on full display earlier this week, as Wynonna and Naomi traded one liners at the party celebrating their new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville.
The comedy started soon after Naomi brought her daughter to the stage.
“In one of our biggest fights, we talked about which one of us would be institutionalized,” Wy reminisced as her mother reacted: “Oh no!”
“Well, here we stand together!” Wynonna grinned, as the crowd erupted in laughter.
Even though the barbs kept coming, it was obvious that both Judds were overwhelmed by the honor from one of country music’s most esteemed institutions. The two recalled their humble beginnings, and how a career was born when Naomi — who was working as a nurse at the time — slipped producer Brent Maher a cassette when his daughter was in the hospital.
“That demo tape, we recorded on one tape recorder,” Wynonna explained, “and then we pushed play and then recorded on the second tape recorder, cause we were high-tech…”
“And we made it…” she marveled. “I say the heck with the Kardashians, you’re the original duck face!” Wy said to Naomi, as the crowd roared.
In the end, Wynonna offered a sweet sentiment to her mother, as she closed: “I love you dearly, and I don’t know when I’ll see you again. We don’t see each other very often, but I just know this, that when we sang something marvelous happened, and I felt it. And it had to have been God. And that’s why I believe today.”
The Judds: Dream Chasers opens on Friday, and runs through July 14 of next year.
