Walker Hayes reveals the devastating details of the loss of his seventh child

Monument RecordsIn this week’s issue of People magazine, Walker Hayes reveals the heartbreaking details of the loss of his seventh child.

On the morning of June 6, the “You Broke Up with Me” singer and his wife Laney were preparing for a home birth with a midwife, but then, the unexpected happened. Laney’s uterus ruptured, a rare occurrence that caused the baby to be deprived of blood flow and suffocate.

Both were rushed to the hospital, but it was too late for the baby girl the couple had named Oakleigh Klover. Things were touch and go for Laney as well, but after two hours of surgery and massive transfusions, the 39-year-old was saved.

Afterwards, Walker had to reveal Oakleigh’s fate to both his wife and his six children, who range from ages three to 12.

The baby was later laid to rest in a graveside service presided over by Craig Cooper, the inspiration for Walker’s latest single, “Craig.”

“Laney and I have cried a lot,” Walker tells People, “but the one thing that makes me happiest is how much love has been around us. We’ve had the most remarkable questions answered and advice given from people around our neighborhood and in meet-and-greet lines.”

You can read more about the couple in the new edition of People, which comes out on Friday.
