The Old Dominion hit factory: How the ACM-winning Vocal Group keeps turning out hits for themselves — and others

ABC/Image Group LA Old Dominion just celebrated the one-year anniversary of their Happy Endings album, as the record’s third single, “Hotel Key,” is on track to be their latest #1.

Even though they’ve spent the summer on Kenny Chesney‘s Trip Around the Sun stadium tour, the group of songwriters still manages to not only write their own material, but to turn out hits for their peers: Brad Tursi helped Luke Bryan craft his #1, “Light It Up,” while Matthew Ramsey and Trevor Rosen had a hand in writing both Michael Ray‘s current single, “One That Got Away,” as well as the album track, “Dancing Forever.” Trevor co-wrote Kelsea Ballerini‘s hit “I Hate Love Songs” as well.

So how does the ACM Vocal Group of the Year manage to do it?

“I think, you know, the secret is just…” Trevor trails off, as he ponders the question. “I mean, we moved [to Nashville] a long time ago to write songs, to figure out how to write the best song we could possibly write.”

“So, I don’t know. I guess there’s no real secret,” he admits. “We’re just constantly trying to get with our co-writers and our buddies that inspire us and just write the best song that day.”

One of Trevor’s first big hits was 2013’s “Better Dig Two” by The Band Perry. Half a decade later, the Michigan native finds the process energizing.

“We work hard, but it’s also fun,” he tells ABC Radio. “We just love to create… You know, you sit there and do it enough times and hopefully it pays off. It’s been paying off for us pretty well here.”

“Once the snowball starts rolling, hopefully it doesn’t stop,”  Brad interjects, as his band mates laugh. “It takes awhile to get the ball rolling,” he adds.
