ABC/Image Group LA Just a couple days ago, a group of twenty-five lucky British fans were the very first people to hear Maren Morris‘s sophomore album, as she hosted an invitation-only listening session in London.
While some have speculated that Maren’s record might veer in a more pop direction, thanks to her success with her Zedd collaboration “The Middle,” she insists that’s not the case.
Instead, just like her debut Hero, the Texas native says the album being informally called MM2 will include lots of flavors.
“My last album, it was like a little bit of everything,” Maren tells ABC Radio. “And there’s some R&B, there’s some country, there’s some Motown-y stuff happening. I just sing and that’s what comes out.”
“And so, ‘The Middle,'” she explains, “even though that’s like with Zedd, and [he]’s like this huge EDM artist, it’s still my voice.”
Bottom line: Even though her sound embraces lots of different styles, Maren says it’s still rooted in country.
“This next record I’m putting out, I got a lot of questions like, ‘Oh, now that you’ve done “The Middle” are you gonna make a pop album?’ And I was like, ‘No, cause I’m gonna make a “me” album,'” she says, settling the issue.
“Like, me coming into that Zedd song was me as a guest,” she adds, “and so this is, like, still my stuff, which is very much rooted in the songwriting aspect and country, but there’s a lot of soul on this next record.”
So far, we don’t know when we’ll get to hear the first taste of Maren’s second album. The final single from Hero, “Rich,” is currently at #2 on the chart.
