ABC/Image Group LAJust off their Grammy win for “Tequila,” Dan + Shay kick off their sold-out headlining tour tonight in New Orleans.
Soon, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney will have another chance to expand their trophy collection at the ACM Awards: They’re up for Single, Song and Video for their crossover smash, plus Duo and Album of the Year as well.
They could also take home the Music Event honor for “Keeping Score,” their track with Kelly Clarkson.
“That’s a special song to us,” Dan tells ABC Radio, “and singing with Kelly is one of the coolest things we’ve ever gotten to do… We’re obviously her biggest fans, and she’s one of the best singers that’s ever lived.”
“We wrote that song,” he recalls, “and we were like, this would be… a cool collaboration. And we sent it to her, and literally within like an hour, she hit back and was like, ‘Love to sing this with you guys.'”
Dan admits the odds were kind of in their favor.
“She’s a huge fan of country music,” he explains, “lives in Nashville, and [has] lots of close ties to some of our friends and family.”
“It was awesome,” Dan says of recording with Kelly. “We flew out to Los Angeles, recorded that, and it made it on the record.”
“We haven’t got to sing it live with her yet,” he points out. “We’re looking forward to that… we might be a little nervous standing onstage singing next to her, because she’s so incredible.”
That chance could come April 7 at the ACM Awards. Kelly’s already tweeted Dan + Shay that she’ll see them in Vegas.
By the way, Morgan Evans is opening Dan + Shay’s tour, while his wife, Kelsea Ballerini, happens to be out with Kelly.
