ABC/Image Group LANot only are Dan + Shay up for seven trophies at tonight’s Billboard Music Awards — including two all-genre honors — they’ve also snagged a coveted performance slot on the show.
While we don’t know what they’ll sing, we do know they’re teaming up with pop singer/songwriter Tori Kelly.
“Tori’s been a friend for a few years now,” Dan Smyers explains. “We’re fans of hers, she’s a fan of our music.”
“It was like, ‘You want to sing this with us on BBMAs?'” he continues, “and it just came together. [Monday] was the first time we got to sing it together in person, and it was magical.”
“I just get to be a super-fan of Shay and Tori going back and forth on the vocals,” Dan adds. “It’s gonna be a special moment.”
“It’s hard to sing when you’re next to her,” Shay Mooney points out, “because she is so good.”
Shay admits the all-genre evening is giving him a few butterflies. “I’m a little bit nervous,” he says, “more nervous than I usually would be I think for an awards show.”
At the same time, the hitmakers behind “Tequila,” “Speechless” and “All to Myself” are excited to see some of their non-country favorites.
“We fan-girled over Khalid,” Shay confesses, going on to mention the performances he’s going to try to catch: “I think probably Khalid and maybe Taylor Swift, I’m gonna watch her and Brendon [Urie]. It’s gonna be awesome.”
“I’m stoked for the Jonas Brothers,” Dan chimes in. “We’re big Jonas Brothers’ fans. They’re friends of ours, and their new music’s amazing. They’re killing it right now… This is like their first TV performance back, so it’s gonna be good.”
You can catch the Billboard Music Awards tonight at 8:00 ET on NBC.
