Scott Legato/NBCDolly Parton surprised the crowd at 2019 Newport Folk Festival when she joined The Highwomen —comprised of Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby — to perform a medley of her hit songs.
After singing a snippet of Dolly’s “Eagle When She Flies” a cappella, Brandi introduced Dolly herself as the “incomparable unicorn legend.” That led into a collaborative performance that included Dolly’s iconic hits like “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You” and “Just Because I’m a Woman.”
Prior to the performance, Morris shared a video on Twitter of Dolly and her Highwomen bandmates rehearsing “Eagle When She Flies” — it shows them all harmonizing while standing together in a circle. “Brb crying on the inside till the end of time,” Maren writes.
Maren also revealed during the 60th annual festival that “Girl” has topped the Mediabase country chart. What made the news even more exciting for Maren is that Dolly congratulated her on the accomplishment while on stage: She shared a video of the special moment on Twitter.
“Girl” follows in the footsteps of “I Could Use a Love Song,” which became Maren’s first number one single as a solo artist in 2018.
