ABC/Randy HolmesGarth Brooks has a fan in Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor and singer Donald Glover.
During a stop at Australian radio station Triple J, Donald transformed into his Grammy-winning musical alter ego, Childish Gambino, and performed a surprise cover song by Garth’s alter ego, Chris Gaines.
As you may recall, in 1999, the country superstar created the character of Gaines, a rock star from Australia, and recorded an entire album as him.
During the radio appearance, Childish Gambino performed the album’s lead single “Lost in You.” The rapper kept Garth’s falsetto, but made it more of a spiritual number with the presence of an organ, soothing choir and his gentle voice.
Garth Brooks in…The Life of Chris Gaines crossed over to the pop charts after its release, reaching #two on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart, while “Lost in You” peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Garth’s alter ego was also supposed to be the subject of a film titled The Lamb, but that never came to fruition.
