Carrie Underwood Heads Down Under with Keith Urban in December

Arista NashvilleJust a few days ago, Keith Urban announced his new album, Ripcord, will feature a duet with Carrie Underwood, and he remarked he’s hoping the two will get the chance to perform “The Fighter” together onstage. Now, we know that’s pretty much a sure thing: Carrie will join Keith for the Australian leg of Keith’s tour this December.

This will be the third trip “down under” for the “Church Bells” singer, who did album promotion there in 2011, and returned in 2012 on her Blown Away tour.

The Dakota Wesleyan University softball team’s bats were quieted by conference leading Morningside College in a doubleheader yesterday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell.  The Tigers scored two early, but were shut down the rest of the way in a 9-2 loss in game one, while the #14 Mustangs broke out late to pull away for a 5-1 win in the finale.  The losses drop DWU softball to 23-15 overall and 6-4 in the GPAC.  DWU freshman Savannah Ahumada drove in her team leading 36th run with a first-inning triple in game one and later scored on an RBI single from freshman Sierra Haage.  The Tigers were limited to just three hits the rest of the way as Morningside, 27-5 overall and 8-0 in the GPAC, built to its lead throughout.  Freshman pitcher Hallie Misiaszek took the loss in game one, allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 11 hits, while walking four and striking out two. Misiaszek is 8-4 this season.  The teams battled in a low-scoring game in the finale, as the score was tied at one through four innings.  DWU got its lone run in the third inning on a RBI single from freshman Karly Severance.  After taking a one-run lead in the fifth, Morningside got three insurance runs in the seventh to put the game away as DWU left nine runners on base in the loss.  Haage was charged with the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits, while walking two and striking out four.  She is 10-5 this season.  Morningside has won 14 games in a row.  The Tigers continue conference play against Hastings College at 1:00pm and 3:00pm Saturday at McWhirter Field in Mitchell.  Hastings is 23-13 overall but 0-6 in the GPAC.  Sunday the Tiger softball team will host Midland University at 1:00pm and 3:00pm and then the Tigers travel to Mount Marty to battle the Lancers in Yankton on Wednesday at 4:00pm and 6:00pm.   

 

The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team, 16-13 overall and 2-2 in the GPAC, will hit the road for a conference doubleheader against Northwestern College today at 5:00pm and 7:00pm in Orange City Iowa.  Northwestern is 14-16 overall and 3-1 in the GPAC.  The Tigers swept Northwestern 5 to 4 and 16 to 8 in Mitchell back on March 25th.  The Tiger baseball team will also host Midland University on Sunday at 1:00pm and 3:00pm, host Mayville State on Wednesday also at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.  The Tiger baseball team will be at home at Cadwell Park 10 out of their next 11 games. 

 

Mitchell’s Athletic Director Geoff Gross has been named one of the Region AD’s of the Year from the South Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association.  The announcement was made at their spring conference in Sioux Falls last month.  Gross was named Region 6 Athletic Director of the Year along with Tim Hawkins of Ethan, named Region 5 AD of the Year.  Congrats to Geoff Gross and Tim Hawkins on your honor.     

 

The Mitchell boy’s tennis team will host their season home opener today when they welcome St. Thomas More to Hitchcock Park.  The dual match starts at 12:30pm.  After today the tennis team will be at O’Gorman on Tuesday for a dual that starts at 4:00pm.   

 

The Kernel track and field team will be in Huron today and in Yankton next Tuesday for their next action.  Today starts at 3:30pm and Tuesday starts at 4:00pm.  The Corn Palace Relays here in Mitchell will be held on Saturday April 16th

 

The Mitchell spring baseball team, 4-0 overall, will host Brandon Valley tonight at Cadwell Park in a doubleheader at 5:00pm and 7:00pm followed by a Saturday doubleheader at home against Watertown at 4:00pm and 6:00pm.  KORN will start spring baseball coverage on Saturday at 4:00pm on AM 1490 KORN and on-line at 1490korn.com. 

 

The Mitchell Kernel girl’s golf team will tee-off their season on April 14th at Harrisburg at Spring Creek Country Club starting at 10:00am.

 

It’s the 13th Annual KORN/Q107 Elite Eight Athletes of the Year Award.  KORN/Q107-3 and The Depot of Mitchell are coming together to recognize our area’s Elite 8 Athletes of the Year.  Male or Female athletes of any sport are eligible.  There will be eight males and eight females from our area that will represent our Elite group.  A banquet will be held in their honor on Thursday night, May 19th in the Freight House Room of the Depot in Mitchell at 6:30 pm.  As with any award, there are some criteria.  The athletes must be a junior or a senior, have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be involved in community activities.  If you are a coach and have an eligible candidate for the KORN/Q107 Elite 8 Athlete of the Year, please submit a nomination form with the information that is required.  Entries are to be received no later than May 7th. The Minnesota Twins were swept in a three-game series at Baltimore after their 4 to 2 loss last night.  Phil Hughes took the loss despite tossing six strong innings.  Trevor May came on to pitch the final two innings.  Joe Mauer had a homerun for the Twins, 0-3 overall.  The Twins head to Kansas City for a three game series with the Royals starting tonight at 7:15pm.  Ervin Santana will start tonight after pitching on Monday in a rain delayed game in Baltimore.  Tommy Milone and Ricky Nolasco will get the nod on Saturday and Sunday.  The Twins host the Chicago White Sox on Monday for the home opener at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Delmont church looking to the future

DELMONT, S.D. (AP) — Members of Zion Lutheran Church in Delmont celebrated Easter in the town’s community center, but they hope to be worshipping in a new church come Christmas.

The congregation’s century-old church was destroyed by a May 2015 tornado that damaged or destroyed dozens of structures and injured nine people.

Head Trustee Jim Kaufman says the final blueprint for a new church is being sent to five contractors for bids. The goal is to start construction sometime next month.

Kaufman says parishioners never considered not rebuilding. He says six generations of his family have attended Zion Lutheran.

Kaufman also says that with insurance money and donations providing the necessary resources, it’s a “no-brainer” to rebuild.

Museum re-modeling complete

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) — The Prehistoric Indian Village in Mitchell is opening its remodeled Boehnen Memorial Museum on Friday.

The renovation began in the fall of 2014. It includes a new audio-visual technology wing, exhibits, gift shop, lighting and a newly configured entrance. A large teaching garden also has been added to the museum’s grounds.

Village Executive Director Cindy Gregg says the project will give visitors an expanded educational experience.

The site is a 1,000 year-old Native American village being excavated each summer by students from the University of Exeter in England and Augustana University in Sioux Falls. It’s the only active archaeological site open to the public in South Dakota.

"Little Bit of You" Started as a String of Texts with Chase Bryant's Ex-Girlfriend

BBR Music GroupChase Bryant’s second single, “Little Bit of You,” is not only the biggest hit of his career so far, it also has a serious shot at going number one — not too bad for a song that was a bit of an accident.

“Man, it was kinda one of those songs that just happened spontaneously. We weren’t really meaning to write that one, it kinda just happened,” he recalls. “It was a text message back and forth between me and my ex-girlfriend that I was with at the time, and that’s really kinda how it started. It was just kind of a log of text chains that had kinda come back and forth and back and forth.”

From there, Chase says he ended up writing a straightforward song about what it’s like to be away from the one you love.

“I felt like I just was like ready to write a song that wasn’t trying to be clever and wasn’t trying to be anything contrived. It was just one of those songs that just said, ‘I need you here, that’s what it is, and I need you here now.’ And that’s really how it got written, too. You know what I mean? I think it’s just a real sum-up of what the sky looks like at midnight and what you need there beside you.”  

The Texas native also managed to craft a song that has some longevity. “Little Bit of You” has been on the charts for almost a year.

Nashville Notes

Burke/Triolo Productions/Thinkstock “I Met a Girl” hitmaker William Michael Morgan has a new little girl in his life. The newcomer’s daughter Presley Morgan was born on March 23.

Friday night was a “historic” one on the Garth Brooks World Tour, in the words of the icon himself, as “the Queen” was forced to miss her first show in the 25 years the husband-and-wife team have worked together. Trisha Yearwood is sick the with the flu, Garth reported in a Facebook video from backstage in Louisville.

Patsy Cline Museum Set to Open in Downtown Nashville

Credit: The Patsy Cline MuseumPatsy Cline will soon be Johnny Cash’s upstairs neighbor in downtown Nashville. Bill Miller, the founder of the popular Johnny Cash Museum, is set to start construction on a similar structure honoring the country icon, who died in a plane crash at the peak of her career in 1963. It will occupy several thousand square feet above the Cash museum on Music City’s Third Avenue.

Opened in cooperation with Patsy’s children, the museum will feature never-before-seen pieces from the family’s personal collection, including the “Walkin’ After Midnight” singer’s personal possessions, costumes, awards, letters, furniture and photos. It’s set to be the largest collection of rare Patsy Cline artifacts in the world. No word so far on an opening date.

Clare Bowen & Chris Carmack from ABC's "Nashville" Play Benefit for Emmylou Harris's Bonaparte's Retreat This Weekend

ABCCountry Music Hall of Famer Emmylou Harris hits the stage with the stars of ABC’s Nashville this weekend in Music City. Clare BowenChris Carmack and more will play a benefit Saturday night at Nashville’s 3rd & Lindsley, as part of the annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival.

Money raised goes to Bonaparte’s Retreat, a nonprofit Emmylou founded in 2004 after the death of her beloved pup Bonaparte. Its mission is to rescue shelter dogs and adopt them into forever homes.

“Bonaparte had this really friendly demeanor, loved people, [was] very sociable, loved other animals. Once you have the experience of having a dog on the road with you, you don’t realize how lonely you’ve been without one. So he went everywhere with me. He was my constant companion for 10 years,” she reminisces.

The name “Bonaparte’s Retreat” is also a tip of the hat to the song that was a huge hit for Pee Wee KingKay Starr and Glen Campbell. The show starts at 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. You can find out more about Emmylou’s cause online at BonapartesRetreat.org.
