All Rights ReservedWhen Miranda Lambert had the chance to cover an Elton John song for the Restoration album and to perform it on tonight’s Grammy tribute on CBS, the reigning CMA and ACM Female Vocalist of the Year picked a track from a classic album from 1970.
“Elton John is, I mean, obviously iconic,” Miranda says. “But I actually discovered Tumbleweed Connection later on. ‘My Father’s Gun’ is on Tumbleweed Connection. I only discovered it, like we’d listened to it again a couple years ago.”
Miranda candidly admits she was dead-set on doing “My Father’s Gun,” because of the impact it had on her personally.
“Sometimes you hear things differently. And I’d gone through some things in my life,” she explains. “And so it’s almost like I rediscovered it, and it impacted me totally differently as an adult who had been through some things. I don’t know, it’s crazy how music can touch you over and over again.”
As for her performance on I’m Still Standing: A Grammy Salute — which was taped shortly after the awards this year — Miranda admits she was uncharacteristically nervous to sing in front of the legend and his longtime lyrical partner, Bernie Taupin.
“It’s very intimidating and terrifying to perform for Bernie and Elton, who are sitting right there,” she confesses. “And you’re hoping that you’re doing their song justice. But I think every artist probably feels the same way. We’re just thrilled to death that we… were chosen to sort of represent them and what they stand for.”
