Beth Gwinn/Getty Images’90s hitmaker Jo Dee Messina has been diagnosed with cancer.
The announcement was made in a message Wednesday from Messina’s team on the “I’m Alright” singer’s website.
The message gave no specifics about the nature of Messina’s illness, just saying “she was recently diagnosed with cancer. It has been a trying summer, but her heart has been filled with gratitude for the many opportunities she has had to see God’s hand at work.”
“We don’t know anything specific regarding the treatment plan at this point, but Jo Dee is working closely with a team to explore all options,” the message continued. “She has taken the semester off from classes at The King’s University, and her last tour date for the year will be October 7 (all other 2017 dates are being postponed), as she will begin cancer treatment this fall.”
Also posted to Messina’s website was a new song, “Here,” written with Seth Mosley and Mia Fieldes after Jo Dee had learned of her cancer diagnosis.
Jo Dee charted 12 top-10 singles from 1996 to 2005, including six number-ones. Her breakthrough album, 1998’s I’m Alright, has been certified double-platinum. Her last album was the self-released Me in 2014.
